The newest Rea Vaya stations – at the Metro Centre, at Nasrec, in Soweto and in Westbury – will soon add to the growing public art in Joburg.
ARTISTS have been appointed to transform the new Rea Vaya Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) stations into artistic masterpieces.
Through a lens, a different perspective on Joburg
Flora More and Bronwyn Kotzen will design the artwork at the two stations on either side of the Metro Centre in Braamfontein. Shannin Antonopoulo will be responsible for the Soweto Highway Station at Soccer City; Murray Turpin and Mphapho Ra Hlasane's artwork will be sandblasted on to the stations at Nasrec Transport Hub.
Usha Seejarim and Sibusiso Gumede who do the artwork for the Soweto Highway Station on Mooki Street, and Senzeni Marasela's work will be displayed at the station near the Westbury Flats on Commando Road.
A brief was given to artists by the Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA) to create a distinct experience at each station, while at the same time aiming for consistency across all the stations. "Each station forms part of a larger system connecting different parts of Johannesburg," explains Lael Bethlehem, the chief executive officer of the JDA.
The JDA, which facilitates the development of the Rea Vaya stations, is also involved in commissioning all the artwork. The artists have been appointed by a consortium made up of the Trinity Session, Turkis and Urban Works, which manage and implement the public art at the Rea Vaya stations.
Zunelle Cairns, the production assistant from Trinity Session, says the description of the art is one of interconnectedness between stations as part of an overall system around travel and movement, as well as between stations and their immediate environment – with regard to the people who live and work there.
The consortium decided that each station should form part of a visual story linking one station to the next, she adds. "We [the consortium] are hoping to start sandblasting on site on Monday [17 May]."
However, the dates of which stations will be done are still being finalised.
