IN THE NEWS The number of people using Rea Vaya buses during the traditional holiday month was only marginally lower than during normal months, with notable use on public holidays.
OVER 300 000 passengers took trips in Rea Vaya buses over December, with Thokoza Park Station by far the most used.
The trunk route runs between Ellis Park and Sowet
The frequency of service was adjusted to cater for the reduction in passenger demand from 16 December. There were no buses on Christmas Day and on 16 December, also a public holiday, Saturday services operated. Although it would serve little purpose to compare average daily demand in December with other months, it can be noted that, although schools had already closed and some commuters started their annual leave early in December, daily demand in the first 11 days of the month averaged 16 300 passengers, compared to 15 500 in November, a normal month. The Rea Vaya service has as yet no history of demand patterns over a December period, yet some trends can be noted. The first 11 days were fairly comparable with previous demand figures, except for the absence of students. November passenger demand was already influenced by students not travelling during exams. Demand touched on 17 000 on some days during December and the average demand on all days that were not public holidays or Saturdays, was about 12 000 passengers. Public holiday demand ranged from a high of 4 600 on 16 December, the Day of Reconciliation, to a low of 1 700 on 26 December, the Day of Goodwill. Thokoza Park remained by far the busiest station in the Rea Vaya system. Use is fuelled by commuters living further into Soweto flocking to the station, the nearest Rea Vaya facility, by means of other transport. It was followed by Carlton Station, Diepkloof, Orlando Police Station, Library Gardens and Art Gallery, respectively. Trip frequency is continually adjusted to cater for the growing demand. The 28 articulated buses used to cater for the demand in November were augmented by a further 16 daily trips operated by four more complementary buses.
