Rea Vaya has joined the City’s You Make Joburg Great campaign, acknowledging the efforts of its staff and supporters in building a world class public transport system.
IT’S the people that make Joburg great. This is the opinion of Rehana Moosajee, the portfolio head of transport in the City.
Taking the message to the Rea Vaya commuters
Rea Vaya is the City’s Bus Rapid Transit system, running regular, speedy, state-of-the art buses from Ellis Park to Soweto. DANCING AND SINGINGWearing white T-shirts emblazoned with campaign slogan, the Rea Vaya activators danced and sang their campaign message through the inner city. By 8am, a party atmosphere prevailed at the Carlton East and West Bound stations. The activators were greeted by loud hooting and shouts of support. Motorists watched from their cars while bus passengers stood on seats to get a better view of the performance. Participants began to do the Diski Dance, which was blended with an energetic Rea Vaya dance featuring hand-clapping and foot-stamping.
Some onlookers took up the refrain “You Make Joburg Great”, though some seemed somewhat perplexed and remained silent. They were cheered on and soon began joining in the celebrations. Patricia Mokgehle started as a volunteer at the Carlton East Bound Station and is now employed full time. “I make Joburg great. Firstly, I volunteered at Rea Vaya and now I’ve got a proper job. Everyone, including the passengers, the staff and all the people who are coming here for the World Cup will be happy because I make Joburg great,” she said.
